アルミ削り出しとはアルミニウムの塊（インゴット）から、マシニングセンタなどの工作機械で不要な部分を削り取り、目的の形状に仕上げる加工方法。金型を必要とせず、高い精度で複雑かつ立体的な形状を実現できる。精密切削技術とアルマイト加工を駆使した、世界最薄レベルのアルミテーブル。

そのデザインの着想源は、粋人が見えない着物の裏地にこだわった、日本の「羽裏の美学」にある。テーブルの裏側を六角形が規則正しく並ぶハニカム構造に立体マシニングセンタで削り出すことで、超軽量・高剛性という機能と、日本の伝統的な吉祥文様である亀甲紋の美しさを両立させた。横から見ると、驚くほどの薄さだ。

天板は、縁のわずか2mmから中央の厚さ12mmに向かって、シャープな弧を描く。このテーブルは、2020年のデザインコンペ「Wemake」から生まれた。京都のアルミニウム工場が高い技術力を活かす自社製品を募集しており、天板・支柱・ベースのすべてをアルミの塊から精密に削り出すという提案で最優秀賞を獲得。

ラウンド、トライアングル、スクエアの3種類のシリーズで製品化され、京都デザイン賞2020では京都府知事賞を受賞した。

I created one of the world’s thinnest tables by machining a solid block of aluminum. The design is inspired by the Japanese aesthetic of “haori-ura”— the hidden beauty of a coat’s lining. By carving a honeycomb structure into the underside of the tabletop, I achieved both functional rigidity and the beauty of the traditional tortoiseshell pattern.

It is a fusion of modern technology and Japanese heritage. It won the Kyoto Prefectural Governor’s Award at the Kyoto Design Awards 2020 Machined from Solid Aluminum

Ho creato uno dei tavoli più sottili al mondo ricavandolo da un blocco pieno di alluminio. Il progetto si ispira all’estetica giapponese dello «haori-ura», la bellezza nascosta della fodera di un cappotto. Scavando una struttura a nido d’ape sotto il piano ho ottenuto rigidità funzionale e la bellezza del tradizionale motivo a guscio di tartaruga: una fusione di tecnologia moderna e patrimonio giapponese.

Ha vinto il Premio del Governatore di Kyoto ai Kyoto Design Awards 2020.
